The work which I will post in 2-3 pieces is a significant re-working of OIV figures for wine market. I took production, consumption and import/exports and tried to calculate the equilibrium of the different markets. Conclusions? The wine world is affected by overproduction, which is concentrated in Europe but which starts to be evident in other continents.

Importazioni vino Italia – aggiornamento 2006
1 commentoFonte: Coeweb Istat
Prezzo medio all’import 0.81EUR al litro.
Well, for the first time we address imports, looking at total numbers for 2006 for the table wines (no sparkling wines here). Proportions are totally different from exports: Italy imports 1.5m hl (lower than 2004-05 at 1.8-1.9), for a value of 121m EURO (lower than 125-135m in 2004-05). Average import price EUR0.81 per liter. Now, if you look at exports you read 17.5m hl, more than 10 times more and 1.66EUR per liter, slightly more than twice.
What countries? COnsidering that the country breakdown might not specifically be the wine origin breakdown (if we import an Argentinian wine from Constellation Brands, I bet it will fall under US imports…), you can see a quite concentrated picture: USA 35%, France 27%, Spain 16% and 22% all the other countries together.
Today we provide the market shares for Italian sparkling wine producers in Italy (both total sector and metodo classico subsector), for 2004-05, as published by Forum Italiano Spumanti.
A first conclusion is that sparkling wine sector is quite concentrated vs. the wine sector in general. The first 4 producers are covering 43.5% of the market. Adding to Campari Cinzano the 2.7% of Barbero (owned by Campari), Campari would become the coleader in the sector and would raise the total stake controlled by the first 4 players to over 46%.
As usual we also analyst sparkling wine exports, which for 2006 totalled EUR300m, +12.6% with a 22% jump in volumes, which for the first time exceeded 1m hl. In december, which is not a very relevant month for exports, growth rates were more moderate, particularly as far as volumes are concerned.
Exports of Italian wine in 2006: we will address both the yearly trend and the December figures (which were not very good.
Dunque Dicembre 2006.
December 2006. not a good month: sales flat at 250m eur, with +10% volumes and 9% mix. All drivers are slightly worse than full year figures
Volumi. Canada sempre fortissimo (+23%).
