Quando tre mesi fa abbiamo analizzato l’andamento delle importazioni ci eravamo lasciati con dei dati in forte crescita: a fine settembre, sui 12 mesi, l’import era cresciuto fino a EUR380m annui, forte di circa 1.9m milioni di ettolitri di vino importato. Da quel momento, i dati hanno cambiato direzione in modo repentino: nell’ultimo trimestre dell’anno le importazioni sono calate del 35-40% rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2007. In questo modo, il saldo finale delle importazioni e’ passato dal +20% di fine settembre a un -6%. E’ stato sufficiente soltanto un trimestre per cambiare direzione? Si’. Come voi sapete, la spina dorsale delle importazioni italiane di vino si chiama Champagne. E lo Champagne si importa tra settembre e dicembre.

When three months ago we analyzed the development of wine imports in Italy, we were looking at the peak: at the end of September, over 12 months, the import had grown up to EUR380m per year, with about 1.9m million hectoliters of wine imported. From that moment, the trend changed direction was sharp: in the last quarter of the imports have decreased by 35-40% compared to the same period of 2007. In this way, the final balance of imports moved from +20% at the end of September to a -6% for the 12 months at December. Was a quarter enough to change direction? Yes. As you know, the backbone of Italian imports of wine is Champagne. And the Champagne is imported between September and December.

L’anno termina quindi con un valore delle importazioni di EUR325m, in calo rispetto ai EUR345m del 2007, ma pur sempre al di sopra dei 286 milioni del 2006. Di questo -6%, la parte di vini imbottigliati segna un -13% da EUR53m a EUR46m, la parte di vino sfuso e’ sostanzialmente stabile (-1%) a EUR85m e la parte di vini spumanti scende in linea con i dato totale (a EUR195m).
The year ends with a value of imports of EUR325m, down compared to EUR345m in 2007, but still above the 286 million in 2006. Of this -6%, the share of bottled wine is -13% from EUR53m to EUR46m, the share of bulk wine is substantially stable (-1%) to EUR85m, and sparkling wines fell in line with the total (to EUR195m).

Il fino fermo straniero in Italia non va proprio. Nel 2008 soltanto il vino francese e quello tedesco hanno tenuto. Nel primo caso, le importazioni di vino sono scese del 6% a 23 milioni, nel secondo caso sono state stabili a EUR4 milioni. Gli altri due paesi importanti per le importazioni di vino fermo imbottigliato sono Portogallo e Spagna: -22% e -31% rispettivamente a EUR7m e EUR5m.
Still bottled wine. In 2008, only French and German wines held on. In the first case, imports of wine fell by 6% to 23 million in the second case were stable at EUR4 million. The other two important countries for imports of bottled still wine are Portugal and Spain: -22% and -31% respectively EUR7m and EUR5m.

Passando al vino sfuso, i flussi commerciali verso l’Italia provengono sostanzialmente dagli USA. Importiamo circa EUR45m di vino sfuso (dato finale 2008) per 576mila ettolitri, con un calo del 9%. Sono in ripresa, invece, le importazioni di vino spagnolo, che sono salite del 45% nel 2008 a 23 milioni di euro (per 623 mila ettolitri). Infine vanno menzionati i 14 milioni di euro che importiamo dalla Francia, in crescita del 5%.
Turning to bulk wine, the trade flows to Italy comes from the USA. We import approximately EUR45m of wine in bulk (as final in 2008) for 576k hectoliters, representing a fall of 9%. The imports of Spanish wine are recoverying by 45% in 2008 to 23 million euros (623 thousand hectoliters). Finally, we import 14 million euro from France, up 5%.

Infine, il capitolo piu’ importante, gli spumanti. Secondo ISTAT dalla Francia le importazioni di vini spumanti sono in calo del 2% anno su anno a EUR183m. Quelle di vino spumante dalla Spagna invece sarebbero in crollo del 46% a EUR5m. Quello che vale la pena di notare nelle importazioni di vino spumante dalla Francia e’ che il prezzo medio di importazioni continua a scendere: nel 2007 abbiamo importato a un prezzo medio apparente di 16.7 euro al litro, nel 2008 siamo passati a 14.2 euro al litro. Visto che secondo i francesi i dati sullo Champagne sono negativi sui volumi ma non sul prezzo-mix, questo significherebbe che gli italiano hanno cominciato a importare Champagne meno pregiato di un tempo. Chissa’ se sara’ vero.
Finally, sparkling wines. According to ISTAT, imports of sparkling wines from France are down 2% year on year to EUR183m. Sparkling wine imports from Spain would fall by 46% to EUR5m. It is worth noting in imports of sparkling wine from France that the average price of imports continues to fall: in 2007 we imported an average price of 16.7 euro per liter; in 2008 we moved to 14.2 euro per liter. Since according to the French Champagne association volumes are negative but price-mix was still positive, this would mean that Italy is importing cheaper Champagne than in the past.
