Se le esportazioni hanno segnato un buon mese di settembre, le importazioni e’ gia’ da qualche mese che stanno crescendo in modo inusuale. Come vedremo nel resto del post, stiamo di fronte a un forte incremento delle importazioni di Champagne dalla Francia: sembrerebbe soprattutto trattarsi di prodotti di qualita’ medio bassa ma i numeri sono importanti. Nel solo mese di settembre abbiamo importato EUR32m di spumanti, per il terzo mese consecutivo si tratta di una crescita superiore al 100%. Di questi, EUR30m vengono dalla Francia e, come sappiamo dalle analisi passate, circa il 90% di questi sono Champagne. I volumi sono altrettanto importanti: negli ultimi 12 mesi abbiamo importato circa il 40% in piu’ in volume e il 30% in piu’ in valore, principalmente dalla Francia. Ne deriva in quadro dove la bilancia commerciale del vino italiano resta stabile (nonostante il buon settembre) e come abbiamo visto a proposito degli spumanti, la bilancia commerciale del segmento sta rapidamente deteriorando dopo il picco raggiunto a giugno. Le altre categorie non destano particolari commenti: i vini imbottigliati fanno +10% a settembre ma restano stabili sui 12 mesi, i vini sfusi fanno +12% a settembre e circa +5% sull’anno.

If exports marked a good month of September, imports are performing very well since a few months. As we will see in the rest of the post, we are facing a sharp increase in imports of Champagne from France: it appears to be mainly products of low-medium quality but the numbers are important. In September alone we have imported EUR32m of sparkling wine, for the third month in sequence it is a growth of more than 100%. Of these, EUR30m come from France and, as we know from past posts, about 90% of these are Champagne. The volumes are equally important in the last 12 months we have imported some 40% more in volume and 30% more in value, mainly from France. This sharp increase is not allowing the trade balance of Italian wine to improve further (despite the good September) and we saw about the sparkling wines that the trade balance of this segment is rapidly deteriorating from a peak reached in June. The other categories are not deserving particular comments: bottled wines are up 10% in September but remain stable on 12 months, bulk wines are up 12% in September and about 5% over the year.

Eccoci ai numeri. Nei 12 mesi abbiamo importato poco meno di 2m/hl di vino, con una crescita del 18%, rispetto a delle esportazioni di vino commentate pochi giorni fa di circa 17.8m/hl. Il prezzo mix delle esportazioni e’ di circa 2EUR/litro (praticamente uguale a quello delle esportazioni) ma e’ spinto dal’elevato valore delle importazioni di Champagne che viaggiano ben oltre i 10EUR al litro. Il quadro, come dicevamo prima e come potete ben vedere dal primo grafico e’ caratterizzato da una sostanziale stabilita’ delle importazioni di vino fermo e da un vero e proprio boom di importazioni di vini spumanti.
In the 12 months we have imported just under 2m/hl wine, an increase of 18%. This compares with exports of wine of about 17.8m/hl. The price of imports is 2EUR/litre (almost equal to that of exports) but it is pushed by the high value of imports of Champagne (well above EUR10 per liter). The picture, as we said before and as you can clearly see from the chart is characterized by a substantially flat import of still wine and a real boom in imports of sparkling wines.

Anzi, il secondo grafico ci da’ un’indicazione in piu’ sui 9 mesi: i vini fermi imbottigliati fanno -7% e se vanno avanti cosi’ praticamente vanificheranno il +8% del 2007. I vini sfusi sono stabili dopo il boom (+22%) del 2007. I vini spumanti invece sui primi 9 mesi dell’anno fanno +43% e questa performance e’ tanto piu’ impressionante quando la si guarda rispetto al +13% e al +23% del 2006 e 2007. L’Italia sembra un vero e proprio terreno di conquista per i produttori di Champagne.
Indeed, the second chart gives us in more the trend of the first 9 months: the still bottled wines are -7% and if they continue with this trend they will offset the +8% in 2007. The bulk wines are stable after the boom (22%) of 2007. Sparkling wines reached the first 9 months a 43% growth: this performance is even more impressive when you consider the +13% and +23% in 2006 and 2007. Italy seems a growth market for producers of Champagne.

Vi piazzo anche un paio di grafici per farvi vedere in particolare come si stanno muovendo le importazioni di vini spumanti dalla Francia: come vedete dal punto di vista del valore (sempre su 12 mesi), storicamente c’e’ stato un primo strappo da 170m a 190m di euro a ottobre 2007. Da luglio a settembre c’e’ stato questo secondo strappo che a portato da 190m agli attuali 230m. Vedremo cosa succede a ottobre, ma questo balzo e’ sicuramente da tenere d’occhio. Dall’ultimo grafico si vede pero’ un trend interessante che differenzia questo balzo da quello precedente: questa volta le esportazioni crescono principalmente grazie ai volumi, mentre il prezzo cala: come vedete siamo passati da un livello medio di EUR16.3 a giugno al livello attuale di 15.5: annualizzando il calo del 5% in un trimestre, staremmo parlando di un -20%…
I put a couple of graphs for you to see in particular how imports of sparkling wines from France are moving: as you can see from value graph (always covering 12 months), historically there was a jump from 170m to 190m euros in October 2007. From July to September there has been the second jump from 190m to 230m today. We will see what happens in October, but this leap is certainly not be ignored. From the graph you see there an interesting trend that differentiates this leap from the previous one: this time exports grew primarily due to volume, while the price is declining: as you can see it moved from an average level of EUR16.3 in June to a level of EUR15.5: annualizing the decline of 5% in a quarter, it means about -20%
