Cosi’ come e’ gia’ successo lo scorso anno, l’Italia ha chiuso il 2007 con un mese un po’ debole. In Dicembre le esportazioni sono scese dell’1% circa in valore e del 16% in volume. Nonostante questo l’anno e’ andato particolarmente bene, con un volume totale di vino esportato di 18.8m/hl, circa il 3.3% in piu’ del 2006, per un valore totale di EUR3,459m, in crescita del 9.4%. Il segmento piu’ in crescita e’ quello dei vini spumanti, che ha vissuto un anno eccezionale con un +28% in valore, che ha portato i vini spumanti a crescere il loro peso sul totale delle esportazioni fino a quasi il 12% del totale. Bene e’ andata anche per i vini sfusi, che sono cresciuti del 15%, mentre i vini imbottigliati, che rappresentano la stragrande maggioranza delle esportazioni hanno fatto segnare una crescita del 6%. Siamo abbastanza chiaramente a un punto di inversione della tendenza (come vedrete dagli ultimi due grafici), che e’ arrivato prima per i volumi, e che sembra ora estendersi anche ai valori delle esportazioni. Vedremo se nei prossimi mesi le cose cambieranno…

Similarly to what happened last year, Italy closed 2007 with a rather weak month. Export in December were down 1% in value and 16% in volume. Despite that, 2007 was a very good year for Italian wine exports, with 18.8m/hl of volumes, +3.3%, for a value of EUR3459m, up 9.4%. The best segment was sparkling wines, which had a fantastic year with 28% increase in value, leading the category to reach a total weight on exports of nearly 12%. A good performance was also posted by bulk wines, which were up 15%, while bottled wines, which are the most important portion of exports were up by just 6%. We are quite clearly at an inflection point, as you will notice in the last 2 graphs: volumes are already starting to decline (trend started last June) and we might now be starting to see the same happening for exports.

In Dicembre i volumi sono andati particolarmente male. Abbiamo esportato 1.36m/hl. Questo calo del 15% e’ stato essenzialmente ai vini sfusi a -30% e ai vini spumanti a -15%. Passando ai dati annui, nel 2007 si sono esportati 11.2m/hl di vini imbottigliati, 6.4m/hl di vini sfusi e 1.2m/hl di vini spumanti.
In December, volumes were performing badly. We exported 1.36m/hl, down 15%, mainly due to a 30% fall of bulk wines and 15% of sparkling wines. Moving to yearly data, in 2007 we exported 11.2m/hl of bottled wine, 6.4m/hl of bulk wine and 1.2m/hl of sparkling wines.

Il prezzo mix e’ finalmente migliorato, piu’ pero’ per il calo dei volumi del vino sfuso (-1% nell’anno) che non per il miglioramento in se della performance all’interno delle categorie. In particolare, nel campo dei vini imbottigliati il prezzo mix si muove soltanto dell’1.5% nel 2007, contro oltre il 10% di miglioramento per sfusi e spumanti.
Price mix finally improved, but this was mainly due to the lower volumes of bulk wines (-1% in 2007), rather than from a very significant increase of the mix within categories (apart from bulk wines). For bottled wines, mix was up just by 1.5% in 2007, vs. a 10% improvement for bulk and sparkling wines.

Vi propongo la suddivisione delle esportazioni di vino imbottigliato nel 2007. Il quadro e’ a mio avviso in miglioramento, nel senso che le esportazioni si stanno gradualmente allargando ai paesi meno importanti: la quota di export fuori dai primi 10 paesi sale dal 12.7% al 14% nel 2007. La Germania e’ andata maluccio, cosi’ come gli USA, principalmente a causa del fattore cambio. Nonostante la debolezza della Sterlina e del Franco Svizzero, il Regno Unito e la Svizzera sono stati chiaramente i migliori paesi di destinazione del vino Italiano nel 2007.
I propose you a table with the country performance of bottled wine for 2007. The picture is overall improving, as exports are gradually spreading among different countries: the weight of exports outside the first 10 countries improved from 12.7% to 14%. Germany was performing not well, same for USA. Despite the weak currencies, UK and Switzerland were clearly outperforming among the top countries for exporting bottled wines.

Infine, i grafici che vi avevo promesso sul trend annuale. Quello che vedete e’ l’evoluzione delle esportazioni cumulate sui 12 mesi a quel mese. Come vedete, per i valori abbiamo ancora un vantaggio di circa il 9% nonostante il rallentamento degli ultimi mesi. Questo perche’ lo scorso anno gli stessi mesi erano andati anche loro male. Invece per quanto riguarda i volumi, come vedete a giugno-luglio il trend di crescita si e’ esaurito. La linea del prossimo anno partira’ da 18.8m/hl, quando la linea dello scorso anno partiva da 18.5 per salire a 19m. Se i volumi non riprendono (come e’ logico attendersi anche rispetto alla vendemmia povera), ci troveremo ben presto di fronte a un volume annuo in calo. E a quel punto far salire il valore delle esportazioni sara’ veramente difficile.

Finally, the graphs for annual trends. This is the evolution of cumulated exports for the 12 months at that month. As you can see, for values we still have a 9% increase, thanks to the fact that the slowdown of the recent months was happening more or less in the same way in 2006. However, that was happening in a trend of growing volumes, which is not repeated this year. If you switch to the graph for volumes, you can notice that the trend inverted in June-July. The line for 2008 will start from 18.8m/hl when the line of last year started from 18.5m and went up above 19m. If volumes do not recover quickly (and we have no reason to think this could happen), we would very early be in front of a volumes fall. And in that scenario, making more money from exports will be very difficult.
